Old Culverhaysians finally returned to winning ways beating a spirited Broad Plain Team 25 – 9 in the Somerset Vase at Odd Down Playing Fields.
Old C’s started well with a smartly taken try by Scrum Half Dan Shepperd to go 5 points ahead early in the first half but indiscipline allowed Broadplain into the lead, a series of silly mistakes cost the Home team 9 points from the boot of the Broad Plain kicker.
Culverhay’s backs played well and strong running from Centre Rob Heathman and Winger Karl Gordon provided much of their momentum in the first half. The highlight of the first half came 30 minutes in when a Powerful run and change of angle allowed the speedy Gordon to crash over the try line close to the posts after a series of controlled phases of Culverhaysian forward pressure.
Broad plain started the second half promisingly but couldn’t convert pressure into points and Old C’s quickly regained the upper hand. Number 8 Ben Newman made an excellent break from his own 22 which took him deep into the opposition half finally being brought down by the opposition Fullback.
The Old C’s forwards disrupted a Broadplain back row move from a defensive scrum causing the opposition to knock on. The resulting scrum was driven strongly by the Culverhaysian forwards providing Newman with the platform to power over the line from 5 metres out.
Old C’s Centres Rob Heathman and Tom Neeld played excellently in the second half making consistent inroads into opposition territory. From one such run Neeld popped neat a pass to Prop Simon Brooks who showed surprising speed to cross from 40metres out running through the opposition fullback to score, Hillbourne converted.
Burnham tried to play their way back into the game but Hillbourne kept the scoreboard ticking over for Old Cs with a well taken drop goal. Broad Plain lost their influential Number 8 with a suspected Hamstring injury 10 minutes before the end. Broad Plain looked like they might score near the death but a prolonged period of pressure ended with nothing after strong try line defending allowed Shepperd to make a massive defensive clearance to send the opposition back deep into their 22. An unfortunate moment of bad temper from the Bristol Team’s number 12 marred the closing seconds of the match. All in all a good win for Culveryhay and a strong platform for future successes.
